Loneliness can mean different things to different people. It is a complicated emotion that may occur when one’s social needs are not being effectively met. It may lead to feelings of emptiness and isolation. You do not have to be alone to feel loneliness. Often, people in relationships have feelings of separation or disconnection with their partner that lead to feelings of loneliness. For some, loneliness can be persistent and ongoing and may lead to a variety of mental health conditions such as depression, substance abuse, low self-esteem or anxiety.
People who are shy or those who experience social anxiety may be reluctant to take steps to help address loneliness issues. We understand.
